In 1831, the town of Canterbury approached Prudence Crandall, a well-educated Quaker teacher, about establishing a school in their town. She agreed, and purchased for the school a mansion, now a museum, on the town square. It was across the street from that of politician Andrew T. Judson, one of her first supporters, yet who would be at the center of the opposition to the school.
